When embarking on the creation of The Vandal, I set out to craft an immersive narrative experience that blends historical themes with fantasy. As a visual novel—a genre I’ve always loved for its storytelling depth and player choice—it allowed me to explore a narrative-driven design while offering multiple paths and endings.

What makes The Vandal stand out, however, isn’t just its compelling story. It’s also how I leveraged AI tools to bring the game’s world and characters to life, achieving a unique aesthetic for this 6th-century journey.

The Story of The Vandal

Set in the 6th century CE, The Vandal tells the story of a warrior navigating the tumultuous final days of the Vandal Kingdom in North Africa. The Vandals, a Germanic people, had crossed into Roman territories decades earlier, conquering parts of Gaul and Spain before eventually seizing Carthage in 439 CE. Now, with their kingdom under siege by the Byzantine Empire, players step into a tale filled with existential tension as the kingdom faces its twilight.

As the protagonist, players make choices that shape their journey, uncovering the secrets of their people while forging their own destiny. The game offers multiple endings, reflecting the consequences of the decisions made along the way.

Bringing the World to Life with AI

To create the visual world of The Vandal, I turned to a combination of AI tools for both character designs and backgrounds, which offered several advantages for a solo developer like me.

Efficiency: Generating all assets manually would have been incredibly time-consuming. Using AI allowed me to create high-quality visuals that complemented the narrative in a fraction of the time.

Customizability: By iterating with prompts and fine-tuning the generated assets, I ensured that the art matched the historical tone of the game, striking a balance between authenticity and creativity.

Cohesion: The consistent style across characters and backgrounds immerses players in the story while highlighting the game’s unique aesthetic.

Here’s a breakdown of the AI tools I used:

  • Dreamina: This tool was instrumental in generating stunning backgrounds and some of the characters. It helped me depict a mix of historical realism and subtle fantasy elements, capturing the atmosphere of a 6th-century journey.

  • Canva AI: I used Canva AI to refine and customize the character designs. This ensured that each protagonist and supporting figure aligned with the tone and setting of the story, bringing their personalities to life.

  • ChatGPT: Beyond visuals, ChatGPT supported me in brainstorming ideas, refining story arcs, and crafting engaging dialogue, enriching the narrative depth of the game.

Together, these tools allowed me to focus on storytelling and gameplay while delivering a visually immersive and cohesive game world.

Looking Ahead

While The Vandal is already a completed project, I see it as just the beginning. In the future, I plan to expand the game by adding more narrative branches and endings, further enriching the player experience and exploring the full potential of the story.

I’m excited to share this journey and the tools that made it possible. What are your thoughts on the use of AI in game development? I’d love to hear your perspectives and connect with others exploring similar creative paths. Stay tuned for more updates on my projects and development process!
