In my first blog post, I introduced my journey into video game development and shared a glimpse of my portfolio. Today, I want to dive deeper into one of my first projects: The Penguin Queen's Odyssey.

Plot and Overview

The Penguin Queen's Odyssey is a whimsical 2D adventure that follows the journey of Neferusobek, queen of Egypt. Her envious cousin, with the help of the god Seth, transforms her into something Egypt has never heard of or seen before: a penguin! Neferusobek must therefore embark on a perilous odyssey. Along the way, she seeks the aid of benevolent deities and battles fearsome enemies to reclaim her throne—and her human form.

This project was my playground for blending storytelling with level design, creating a unique world that merges ancient Egyptian mythology with a humorous and adventurous twist.

Challenge: Creating Platforms and Terrain with Tilesets

One key aspect of the game was designing the platforms and ground that formed the core of the gameplay. I used tilesets to build these elements, as they allowed for efficient and visually cohesive level creation.

However, the process wasn’t without its challenges:

  • Seamless Integration: Ensuring that tiles aligned perfectly to avoid visual gaps or uneven surfaces.

  • Collision Precision: Defining accurate collision properties so that the queen’s movements felt natural and responsive.

By experimenting with Unity’s tilemap editor and testing small segments before finalizing levels, I overcame these hurdles and created environments that complemented the game’s mechanics and narrative.

Lessons Learned

Working with tilesets gave me valuable experience in balancing technical execution with creative design. While it was challenging at first, the process helped me gain confidence in using tools that streamline level creation.

What’s Next for the Penguin Queen?

Though the game stands as a complete project, I’m excited by the potential to revisit Neferusobek’s world in the future. For now, the lessons I’ve learned from this project are helping me tackle new challenges in my current and upcoming projects. In future blog posts, I’ll share more about additional development challenges and design choices that I went through, which taught me more about this world.
